Rochdale RUFC 8-14 Stockport RUFC
In conditions that tested both sides to their limits, Rochdale and Stockport battled through relentless rain and swirling winds that turned this Regional 1 North West encounter into a war of attrition rather than a showcase of expansive rugby. The final score saw Stockport emerge 8-14 winners, but the contest was pretty even with both sides battling to the end.
Coming into the match on the back of four defeats, Rochdale remained in positive spirits. Forwards coach Tom Callaghan explained before kick-off that preparations had gone well and that the game plan had been adapted to suit both the weather conditions and what the coaching staff expected from Stockport.
Pre-match interview with Tom Callaghan
With standing water across parts of the pitch and a strong crosswind disrupting kicking and handling, both teams were forced to keep things tight. Every carry, tackle and clearance kick was made considerably harder by the miserable conditions, with possession at a premium throughout.
Rochdale made a strong start, using the wind and intelligent tactical kicking to spend the majority of the first half deep inside Stockport territory.
From Rochdale's first lineout, Ben Sunderland burst through the defence and came close to opening the scoring, but the slippery ball proved difficult to control in the challenging conditions.
Rochdale's aggressive defensive press worked well but inevitably began to concede penalties. Despite Stockport's kicking game and regular box kicks, the home side maintained the pressure, and their efforts were rewarded when Will Simmons crossed for the opening try during the first quarter.
Rochdale continued to dominate territory through excellent tactical kicking, effective rolling mauls and old-fashioned "stick it up your jumper" rugby.
That sustained pressure earned a penalty inside the Stockport 22, which Dom Serridge calmly converted to extend Rochdale's lead to 8-0.
Despite enjoying much of the possession and territory, Rochdale were pegged back after 21 minutes when Stockport prop Paul McGookin powered over for a try. Fly-half Calum Owen added an excellent conversion in the difficult conditions to reduce the deficit to a single point at 8-7.
The weather showed no sign of easing after the interval, with driving rain making ball retention increasingly difficult. Stockport had an opportunity to take the lead early in the second half, but Owen's penalty attempt drifted wide.
With the wind now favouring the visitors, the territorial battle swung the other way. Rochdale found themselves defending Stockport's tactical kicking game and spending longer periods without possession.
The visitors eventually found a second breakthrough on 58 minutes when flanker Edward Poulson crossed following a sustained spell of forward pressure. Owen again judged the conditions superbly, adding the conversion to put Stockport 14-8 ahead.
To their credit, Rochdale refused to be beaten. Despite battling both the conditions and a well-organised Stockport side, they continued to compete fiercely in every collision and contest.
Rochdale came close on several occasions and made it a tense finish, but Stockport's defence held firm through the closing stages to secure the victory.
While spectators witnessed few moments of attacking flair, this was a match that demanded resilience, discipline and determination. In torrential rain and swirling winds, both teams showed tremendous commitment, with Stockport ultimately proving just that little bit more clinical when their opportunities arose.
After the match, coach Steve Collins praised his players' effort and commitment, saying he could not have asked for any more from the squad. Josh Scholefield was named Player of the Match for an outstanding display under the high ball and a series of excellent kick returns.
