Eddie Deasey

In Club News by Rochdale Rugby

It is with great sadness that we have to let you know of the passing of Eddie Deasey. As a valued member of our rugby club, he was RRUFC Club Captain 1962-63, Chairman from 1973-74 and Lancashire President from 1991-2.

A very well respected member of our community he will be greatly missed and our thoughts go out to his friends and family.

Died peacefully on 8th March 2024, aged 92 years. Loving husband of Barbara. Father of Michael and John. Supportive father-in-law of Christine. Grandad of Ronan and Liam, and Great-Grandad of Finley. Devoted brother of Rita.

Eddie will be fondly remembered for his lifelong passion and involvement in the Rugby Union community and as a Physical Education Teacher.

Peter Hughes, Past Lancashire County President, and great friend of Eddie writes:
“It is with great sadness that the County has learned of the death of Eddie Deasey after several years of illness. He was a real Rugby gentleman who served Rochdale and Lancashire faithfully for many years. Eddie played for Rochdale as a scrumhalf, when the ball was put in straight!!

From that club, he twice played for Lancashire in the 1958-59 season, against Cheshire and Durham. On retiring, he became a County Selector and later Team Secretary during the early eighties. This was when Lancashire won the County Championship against both North Midlands and Gloucestershire, with Internationals Beaumont, Cotton, Neary and Slemen amongst others.”

Funeral to be held on Wednesday 3rd April 2024 at 12:00noon at St Vincent’s RC Church, Norden, Rochdale OL12 7QL, followed by a Committal at 1:20pm at Rochdale Crematorium, Bury Road, Rochdale OL11 4DG. Family flowers only please.
