The final fixtures of the 2025-26 season were played on 12 April, which now seems a long time ago. Furthermore, the start of the new season has been delayed by the exceptionally hot summer. Nevertheless, Lancashire clubs have returned to action through a series of pre-season friendlies, including the Lancashire East 7s Festival held on Saturday 29th August, hosted by Rochdale RUFC and supported by Lancashire RFU.
The festival featured two exciting seven-a-side tournaments: an Over-35 Veterans competition and an Open tournament. It was fantastic to see both familiar and new faces back on the rugby field, playing and celebrating the game in the true spirit of rugby union.
Over 130 players from East Manchester, Oldham, Littleborough and Rochdale took part, with clubs fielding multiple teams across the two competitions. The participants quickly adapted to the unique demands of the seven-a-side format, displaying excellent handling skills, accurate passing and determined last-ditch tackling throughout the day.
Despite challenging weather conditions, the pitches remained in excellent condition and a strong crowd of spectators turned out to support the event.
The sense of belonging within the local rugby community was evident throughout the day. Newcomers commented enthusiastically on the camaraderie and welcoming atmosphere, many expressing a desire to return for future events.
All matches were played in excellent spirit, reflecting great credit on every club involved. Special thanks must go to the officials whose efforts ensured the tournament ran smoothly. A big thank you to the five society referees who helped keep the fixtures flowing throughout the day.
On the field, Rochdale emerged victorious in the Open 7s competition, while an experienced Oldham Veterans side claimed the Over-35 title. Congratulations to all the players who took part.
Off the field, cold drinks, good food and great music helped create an enjoyable festival atmosphere for players and spectators alike.
A tremendous amount of hard work behind the scenes contributed to the tournament’s success, making it a triumph for everyone involved, from the organisers and volunteers to the players themselves. Big thanks to Lancashire RFU for supporting this inaugural Lancashire pre-season rugby festival.
It was a great day for Rugby Union. Let’s hope there are many more like it to come.
