Last week I said the first team had met the big challenge. In their position, at the top, everyone sees them as a challenge. Other clubs target matches against us, a scalp to take. We have failed. A loss to New Brighton away from home at the start of the season would have been considered OK. Rochdale have set the expectations high by playing so well. Not this week though. New Brighton are struggling this season, their performances have been a series of under performances not an absolute demonstration of a bad side. They managed a draw against Altricham Kersal, that should have demonstrated their ability. We went without any commitment to the task in hand. Winning I always say is a habit but it is a habit that is easy to overcome. We are making an attempt to kick the habit. This is just not good enough. It is not the lose it is the manner in which we capitulated.
The second team played against Preston Grasshoppers today. What a change in a side that have been under performing in general! It a good game and the best side won. Well done the twos! You took the game to Hoppers and played with determination and flare. For the first time this season the second team looked like the successors to the first team spots, in fact if a few of this team are not playing next weekend then there is no justice. Well done a great game of rugby. And as a rare additional note well done Preston, without such good opponents the second team would have looked outstanding. Man of the match? OK, the players have had enough praise. It was the referee! Well done Sir. The best performance I have seen with a whistle this season.
The thirds played against the village Spartans and won, comfortably. Expecting praise? You are talking to the wrong man. You opponents had a bad game. They are bottom of the league for a reason. Greed is not a good attribute in a player, the team was full of players attempting to do the impossible. You were before this game just 9th in the league. Your position is justified by your inability to pass the ball, especially when a team mate is just waiting to walk over the line. Does it get worse? Of course it does. Show boating! What is all this about. You cannot even run in a straight line. Why try the impossible. When you left the field you should have apologised to your opponents.
The fourths did what they do best and took a week off.
Last weeks question is still up for grabs. I want to know when the IRB came into existence and there is a tie breaker to say how many member unions are there.
Who wrote the theme music to "One foot in the grave" and what television series launched his career in popular entertainment? Bonus points may be accrued if you can name any radio programs that pre-date his TV involvement. Dennis Bowers had already told me that the composer was Eric Idle. This week Tim Taylor and Tommie Astley both gave the same answer. Dennis had said that his first TV program was Rutland Weekend Television. It was a great show but Monty Python was made before that show. Time Taylor reminded me that he was in Do Not Adjust Your Set. Tommie Astley correctly identified the Frost report as the launch pad from which Mr. Idle got to star in Do not Adjust Your Set. So Tommie wins! And just in case their is nay doubt Mr. Taylor you said that his radio involvement started with I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again. Sorry Mr. Idle was not in that show. In fact the tie breaker was a curve ball because it was only post Python that Eric made the wonderful Radio Five show, that was on Radio One. To give Tim a chance this week I will move onto questions about I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again. In most episodes a dog starred, mostly alongside Professor Prune. What was his name?
Answers and other trivia should be sent to our quiz address. I will see you next week.
