Dale overwhelmed by slick Kirkby
On a grey and misty afternoon at Moorgate Avenue Dale faced League leaders Kirkby Lonsdale unbeaten so far this season. The first exchanges were even with Dale showing good defence and moving the ball well when in possession. However after 5 mins. a gap appeared in the home side’s defence and Kirkby were able burst through with neat passes and score in the corner the conversion was missed 5-0.
Dale kept on probing the Kirkby defence without clear penetration but on 10 mins. they won a line out from which a penalty was awarded and went for the corner rather than go for the 3 pts. However the kick went straight into the dead ball area and a good chance to get on the scoreboard went begging. After 20 mins Jake Castree was forced to retire having picked up a knock and on came 2nd row Gui Desousa to add some weight to the scrums. After 25 mins a promising break by Dale saw West’s final pass go astray and from a scrum at the half way line, Kirkby fed the ball to full back Siya Alam who’s speed and mazy run scythed through the Dale defence to score a good solo try which he converted to make it 12-0. Josh Schofield linked well with Richard West and was unlucky to be stopped 5 metres short of the line. Kirkby were fast to react and broke clear after a turnover ball and with a good passing move between the centres ran in a third try to make the half time score 19-0.
The second half started as the first had ended, a Dale attack broke down and possession went to the visitors who went through the Dale defence to score in the corner the conversion was missed 24-0. A few minutes later following a good attack Dale were penalised for a high tackle on their 22metre line and from the tap Kirkby went first left then right until finally their scrum half Ben Walker dived in under the dale defenders to score near the posts, the try was converted 31-0. Despite their best efforts the home side could not break through the strong Kirkby defence and saw the visitors overlap again and score another try again the kick was missed 36-0. The impressive full back Alam was next to score following up his own clearance kick from the 22 he raced through and collected the ball to score a good individual try which he converted to make it 43-0 with 5 mins. to go. A further try to the now rampant Kirkby forwards was not converted their only weakness being a consistent kicker 48-0.
Dale did manage a consolation try in the final minutes 48-5 but in the next attack a pass on the Kirkby 22 was intercepted by the scrum half Walker who ran in his second try which was converted to leave the final score 55-5. Dale deserved better and did fight to the end against a very slick and confident Kirkby side. Next week Dale visit Eccles and hope for a better result. Dave Rhodes R.R.U.F.C.
